Polyurethane (PU)

Polyurethane (PU) refers to a class of polymers composed of organic units joined by carbamate (urethane) links. It generally has excellent bonding properties and chemical stability, and has been gaining traction in the energy storage industry, particularly as a binder in battery applications. Alfa Chemistry offers high-quality PU binder. Please contact us for pricing and more information on this product.

Properties

PU binder serves as a key component in the electrode materials used in the manufacture of rechargeable batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries. Here are some of the properties of PU binder:

  • Adhesion. PU binder provides strong adhesion between the active materials and the current collectors. This is crucial for maintaining battery performance as it helps to prevent the delamination of the electrode layers during charge and discharge cycles.
  • Electrochemical stability. PU binder can maintain its performance during cycling, contributing to the overall cycling stability and lifespan of the battery.
  • Flexibility. PU binder is known for its flexibility, which allows the electrodes to withstand mechanical stress and strain. This property is especially important in battery applications where expansion and contraction can occur due to lithium-ion insertion and extraction.
  • Thermal stability. PU binder exhibits good thermal stability and maintains its performance over a range of temperatures.

Application Note

The PU binder is thoroughly mixed with the active material, where ratio can range from 30:70 to 1:99, respectively, depending on application, active material, additives, etc. Water is used to dilute the mixture if necessary. To increase viscosity thickener carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) can be added as required. The resulting slurry is coated on current collector (e.g. doctor blade) and the recommended drying temperature is 120 °C.
