Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene which is consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. It is a widely used binder for electrode material mixing in lithium battery research. Alfa Chemistry offers high-quality PTFE, which is a fine dispersion liquid and is stabilized by non-ionic surfactant with a condensed PTFE solid content up to 60%. It is widely used to prepare electrode materials for batteries and super capacitors. Please contact us for pricing and more information on this product.

Properties

PTFE is a commonly used binder material in lithium-ion batteries. It has the following properties that make it widely used in batteries.

  • Adhesion. As a binder, PTFE helps to hold together the active materials and conductive additives within the electrode. It ensures that the materials maintain their structural integrity during the charge and discharge cycles.
  • Chemical and thermal stability. Compared with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder, PTFE binder has better chemical and thermal stability because of its stable CF2-CF2 unit. PTFE is ideal for the applications in alkaline environment since PVDF will strongly degrade in alkaline environment via dehydroflurination. And it can maintain its properties over a wide temperature range.
  • Electrical insulation. PTFE is an excellent electrical insulator, preventing unwanted short circuits between battery electrodes.

Application Note

The PTFE binder is mixed with active material and other additives in mortar to form a paste, which can be rolled into sheet of desired thickness. Ratio can range from 30:70 to 1:99, respectively, depending on application, active material, additives, etc. Ethanol is used to adjust viscosity if necessary. The water is removed after drying at 120 °C, wetting agent is removed by drying at 270 °C. For best mechanical properties, sintering of PTFE particles at 340 °C can be performed.
