Forms
Carbon nanotubes are available in single-walled, double-walled, and multi-walled forms.
- Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). SWCNTs are seamless tubular structures made of a layer of graphene rolled up, with diameters typically ranging from a few nanometers to tens of nanometers. SWCNTs exhibit excellent electronic, mechanical, and mechanical properties, making them ideal for a wide range of applications.
- Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). DWCNTs are composed of two concentric layers of graphene sheets rolled into tubes, one inside the other. The interactions between the two layers provide DWCNTs with enhanced properties compared to SWCNTs. For instance, due to the additional support from the second layer, their mechanical strength and flexibility are higher. In addition, their electrical and thermal conductivity are higher, and their chemical stability and resistance to environmental degradation are stronger.
- Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). MWCNTs consist of multiple concentric layers of rolled graphene sheets. Their layered structure leads to distinct properties. Such as excellent mechanical strength and toughness, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, high aspect ratio, and enhanced durability. MWCNTs are particularly valued in applications that require high strength and durability.
