Battery Materials

Battery materials are an integral part of the battery manufacturing process. They play a crucial role in the performance, efficiency, and sustainability of batteries used in various applications, including electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and consumer electronics. Different types of batteries use different materials, and the performance and life of the battery can be improved by selecting different materials.

Our Products

As your trusted battery material supplier, we offer a range of battery materials, including anode materials, cathode materials, binders and electrolyte materials.

Key Battery Materials

Battery materials refer to the various materials needed to manufacture batteries, mainly including anode materials, cathode materials, binders, electrolyte materials, separators, etc.

The anode is the negative electrode in a battery, and its role is to release electrons to the external circuit.
Common anode materials include:

  • Graphite. Graphite is the most commonly used anode material in lithium-ion batteries due to its good electrical conductivity and capacity.
  • Lithium titanate (LTO). LTO is used in specific applications for its long cycle life and excellent safety, though it has a lower energy density compared to graphite.
  • Silicon-based materials. Silicon-based materials provide a higher capacity than graphite, but suffer from significant volume expansion and contraction during charging and discharging, leading to mechanical degradation.

The cathode is the positive electrode and is responsible for receiving electrons into the battery.
Key cathode materials include:

  • Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). Known for its stability and safety, LiFePO4 is commonly used in larger applications like electric vehicles and grid storage, despite having a lower energy density.
  • Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC). NMC balances energy density, longevity, and safety, making it popular in electric vehicles and portable power tools.
  • Lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA). NCA is mainly used in electric vehicles due to its high energy density and long cycle life.

Binders are materials used to hold the active materials together in both electrodes and ensure good adhesion to the current collectors. Common binders include:

  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). PVDF is a widely used binder in batteries, which has good chemical stability and bonding properties.
  • Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). CMC is a water-soluble binder that is mainly used with other materials, especially in sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries.
  • Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). SBR is often combined with CMC for better mechanical properties. It can improve the flexibility and adhesion of active materials.

The electrolyte is the medium that allows the flow of ions between the anode and cathode.
Types of electrolytes include:

  • Liquid electrolytes. Liquid electrolytes are usually composed of lithium salts dissolved in organic solvents. They are widely used in commercial lithium-ion batteries.
  • Solid electrolytes. Solid electrolytes are known for their potential in all-solid-state batteries, offering excellent safety and stability.
  • Gel electrolytes. Gel electrolytes are a hybrid between liquid and solid electrolytes, providing good mechanical properties and ionic conductivity.

The separator is a permeable membrane placed between the anode and cathode to prevent electrical short circuits while allowing ion flow. Materials used for separators include:

  • Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). PE and PP are commonly used polymers in separator membranes due to their good chemical stability and mechanical strength.
  • Ceramic-coated separators. Ceramic-coated separators provide enhanced thermal stability and safety characteristics.
