Polyacrylic Acid (PAA)

Polyacrylic acid (PAA) binder is a chain polymer water-based binder with a large number of functional groups. Its carboxyl group can form strong hydrogen bonds with active materials and current collectors, effectively improving the stability and performance of the material. It is widely used in the slurry preparation of electrodes for silicon-based lithium batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries and sodium-ion batteries. Alfa Chemistry offers high-quality PAA. Properties

As a binder for electrode materials, PAA has the following unique properties:

  • Adhesion. PAA provides stronger particle anchoring and pole piece cohesion with its linear bonding properties. It promotes strong adhesion of active materials such as lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) to current collectors, ensuring battery structural integrity during charge and discharge cycles.
  • Film-forming ability. PAA can form a denser film in the electrode sheet, increasing the electrical contact between the active material and the current collector, which can greatly improve the cycle performance of the silicon-based negative electrode.
  • Thermal stability. PAA has a low volume thermal expansion coefficient and a large thermal diffusion coefficient, showing good thermal stability. This is essential for battery performance, especially under high-temperature conditions.
  • Ionic conductivity. While PAA itself is not a conductor, its carboxylic acid groups can facilitate ionic transport when incorporated into a composite with conductive materials.

Application Note

The PAA binder is thoroughly mixed with the active material, where ratio can range from 30:70 to 1:99, respectively, depending on application, active material, additives, etc. Water is used to dilute the mixture if necessary. It is strongly recommended to degas the slurry before coating. The resulting slurry is coated on current collector (e.g. doctor blade) and dried (usually at 80°C) in vacuum or ambient environment.
