Etchants refer to the chemical that can selectively etch or peel the target film to obtain the designed pattern in the semiconductor etching process. The wet etching is one of the most important etching process, which mainly achieves the etching goal through chemical reaction between etchants and target films. Almost every target film has a specially suitable etchant to ensure high quality etching results.

Applications

Etchants are mainly used in the etching process of integrated circuit manufacturing and flat panel display manufacturing.

• Integrated circuit manufacturing

In the manufacturing process of integrated circuits, fabs need to make very fine patterns on the wafer. Etchants are the key to forming these fine patterns. They can accurately transfer the photoresist pattern produced by photolithography to the material under the photoresist and form the complex architecture of integrated circuits.

• Flat panel display manufacturing

In the manufacturing process of flat panel display, fabs make circuit patterns on the thin films by etchants to ensure the flat panel display can be lit. Wet etching is often used in flat panel display manufacturing and different target films match different etchants. For example, the etchant of molybdenum/aluminum metal layer is a mixture of phosphoric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid and additives (potassium nitrate or potassium chloride), while the etchant of Cu metal layer is composed of hydrogen peroxide and additives.
