Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR)

Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), also known as polystyrene butadiene copolymer, is made by emulsion copolymerization of butadiene and styrene. SBR is a water-based binder which is mainly used to prepare anode electrode for lithium-ion batteries with strong adhesion and high ageing-retardant. Moreover, when used with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), it is a trending binder for silicon-based electrode which improves the cycling performance. Alfa Chemistry offers high-quality SBR. Properties

SBR possesses several advantageous properties that make it suitable for use as a binder in battery applications:

  • Adhesion. SBR demonstrates strong adhesion to various substrates, which is crucial for binding active materials in battery electrodes.
  • Aging resistance. SBR has good aging resistance, which helps to improve battery stability and extend battery life.
  • Elasticity. SBR possesses excellent elastic properties, allowing the binder to accommodate volume changes during battery operation, which enhances the mechanical stability of the electrode materials.
  • Chemical resistance. SBR is resistant to degradation from various chemicals, enhancing the longevity of batteries.
  • Thermal stability. SBR exhibits good thermal stability, which is beneficial for maintaining battery performance across temperature fluctuations.
  • Compatibility. SBR can be blended with other materials, such as CMC or polyacrylic acid (PAA), to enhance its properties and improve performance.

Application Note

The SBR binder is added to the slurry after other ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Viscosity is adjusted by adding thickeners (e.g. CMC or PAA).
