Wet electronic chemicals are a specialized category of fine chemicals used in various wet-process manufacturing steps across the electronics industry. They play an essential role in semiconductor wafer fabrication, flat panel display (FPD) production, and solar cell manufacturing. Common applications include cleaning, etching, stripping, and surface treatment processes that are critical to the performance and reliability of electronic products.

In electronics manufacturing, contaminants such as metal ions, particles, and organic impurities can have serious consequences. Even trace amounts of contamination may lead to defects, reduced device performance, lower production yields, or shortened product lifetimes.
For example, during semiconductor wafer fabrication, unwanted impurities can interfere with circuit formation at the nanometer scale. Similarly, in display manufacturing, contaminants may cause defects that affect image quality and product reliability.
To minimize these risks, manufacturers use wet electronic chemicals with carefully controlled purity levels that match the requirements of each production process.
The primary purpose of grading wet electronic chemicals is to match chemical purity with the requirements of different manufacturing technologies. As electronic devices become smaller and more complex, production processes become increasingly sensitive to contamination. A level of impurity that may be acceptable in one application can lead to defects, yield loss, or performance degradation in another. For example, solar cell manufacturing typically has relatively moderate purity requirements, while advanced semiconductor fabrication demands extremely low levels of metallic impurities and particles.
To ensure consistent quality and process stability, wet electronic chemicals are therefore classified into different grades based on their purity levels. This standardized grading system enables manufacturers to select the most appropriate chemicals for their specific applications while supporting higher yields, improved performance, and more advanced technology nodes.
One of the most widely accepted classification systems is established by SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International). According to SEMI standards, wet electronic chemicals are divided into five grades: G1, G2, G3, G4, and G5.
| G1 Grade | Applicable process: >1.2 μm Metal impurities: ≤100 μg/L Particle size: ≤1.0 μm |
| G2–G4 Grades | Progressively stricter limits on metallic impurities and particles Suitable for increasingly advanced display and semiconductor applications |
| G5 Grade | Applicable process:<0.09 μm Metal impurities: ≤0.01 μg/L Extremely low particle contamination |
The higher the grade, the more rigorous the purification and quality-control requirements. As a result, higher-grade chemicals are capable of supporting more advanced manufacturing technologies.
The required grade of wet electronic chemicals varies depending on the application.
Typically requires G1-grade chemicals, as the process has relatively moderate purity requirements compared with semiconductor fabrication.
Generally requires G2 or G3 grades to ensure display quality, uniformity, and manufacturing stability.
Purity requirements are significantly higher. Production of 8-inch and smaller wafers commonly requires G3 or G4 grades, while advanced 12-inch wafer fabrication often requires G5-grade chemicals to meet stringent contamination-control standards.
This relationship clearly demonstrates how chemical purity requirements increase alongside technological advancement.
